press fit, reamer or bore it and stop hoping

Need a 0.750 hole for a pin that should press, not slide. I have a 3/4 reamer and a boring bar. The reamer is faster. The last reamed hole I made was a slip fit and I don't know what I did.

A reamer follows the hole you drilled. If the drill wandered, the reamer makes a smooth wrong hole. Bore it if the location matters. Ream it if you only need the size and the start was true. Press fit means you leave it a thou or two under the pin, not 'the reamer said 3/4.'

Mic the pin. Reamers are not all 0.750. Some are plus. A plus reamer will not press. Measure the tool before you blame the lathe.

Reamer is 0.751. Pin is 0.7505. That was the slip fit, wearing a name tag. Bored the next one to 0.749 and it presses. I'll stop calling tools by the number painted on them.
