tailstock die holder, the thread starts drunk

Ran a 3/8-16 die from the tailstock so it would start straight. It started crooked anyway. The die is in a holder I bored. The holder fits the tailstock ram without much slop. I'm missing a step.

The die has to float or it will follow the ram and fight the part. A rigid holder plus a tailstock that's a thou out will start a drunk thread and then keep it. Chamfer the rod. Let the die find the chamfer. Don't clamp the ram so hard the holder can't nod a little.

Loosened the ram clamp a touch and put a real chamfer on, not the one I deburred with a file. Thread starts straight. The holder wasn't the precision instrument I thought I was building. Fine.
