New 5‑HP Lathe Arrived, Still Hitting Chips

The 5‑HP lathe just rolled in. The feed is rough, so I’m using a 1‑inch shoulder rest with a homemade ½‑inch taper. The chip is the picture: it keeps gouging the 3‑in. 10‑in. rod. I’m grinding a new 1‑inch carbide insert, but the HSS tool still cuts cleaner. The debate over carbide versus HSS is still unsettled. I’ll try the HSS first, then switch to the carbide if the surface gets rough. The diagonal is the whole hobby, so I’m tightening the tailstock to keep the part aligned. Phase II prices are up, so I’ll keep an eye on the cost of replacement inserts.
