tailstock barrel has a flat, or I think it does

South Bend 9, year unknown, cabinet. The ram looks shiny on one side and dull on the other, like it was dragged. Centers still seem to meet if I squint. Is this a 'use it' or a 'sleeve it'?

Squinting is not a measurement. Indicate the ram against a test bar in the chuck, locked and unlocked. A cosmetic flat that doesn't move the center is a different machine than one that nods.

Did the bar. Locked, it nods about a thou and a half when I lean on the handwheel. Unlocked it's worse, which I guess is the gib. I'm not sleeving it this winter. I'll keep the drills short and stop pretending the shiny spot is fine.
