10k, the oil in the headstock was tar

Drained the headstock on the 10K. What came out could hold a spoon upright. I don't know the last time it was oil. I flushed with kerosene, then a cheap oil, then the oil I actually bought. Spindle is quieter. There are brass-colored glitter bits in the first flush. How alarmed am I.

Glitter after forty years of tar is not a surprise. If it is still making glitter after the second real oil change, then you have a bearing leaving. Change it again in twenty hours. Look, don't imagine.

Kerosene left in a headstock is its own crime. If you flushed it out, fine. Don't run it on the flush.

Second change is darker than new and has a few specks, not glitter. Quieter stayed quieter. I'll stop hovering.
