quiet lathe in a rental, is that a real request

The 9 inch is in a house with neighbors on both sides. I can run it in the daytime. I cannot run it like a job shop. Is there a sane speed and tool setup that keeps the facing from sounding like a fire alarm, or is the answer 'move.'

A sharp tool at a modest rpm is quieter than a dull one screaming. It will never be quiet. Rubber pads under the cabinet change the note more than they change the volume. Don't promise the neighbors silence.

I told mine I was a woodworker for the first year. The lie did not survive a threading pass. Daytime and a sharp tool is the whole truce.
