Spot with a punch, then a center drill in the tailstock, and the hole is visibly not on the punch. Work is sticking out of the chuck about two inches, 3/8 rod. I thought the punch was the point.

A punch mark on a part spinning in a 3-jaw is not a location. The center drill will follow the part's center, or it will try to and skate if the drill is dull or the tailstock is off. Indicate the tailstock. Don't punch parts you're turning.

Tailstock was out a few thou. I was punching because a video punched. The video was drilling in a mill. Different building. Recentering the tailstock fixed the walk.
