9 inch, mild, HSS I ground last week with an actual relief this time. DOC about 0.005, rpm somewhere in the middle of the pulleys. Long squeal, shiny work, dusty chip. I backed off because backing off is my whole personality.

Dusty and shiny is rubbing. Five thou with a tool that still has a heel, or a tool above center, will rub and sing. Look at the flank. Then put it on center. A deeper cut with a tool that cuts is quieter than a timid cut with a tool that burnishes.
the chip is the picture

yeah i did the tiny doc thing for a month. it just polished and yelled. once the tool was actually cutting, 0.015 was calmer than 0.005. feels illegal. it isnt

There was a heel. I stoned it off. Deeper pass, curl instead of dust, the squeal dropped to a normal lathe noise. I'm choosing to believe this is progress and not luck.
