what did I buy (auction, no nameplate)

Estate auction out past Colfax. I bought the lathe because nobody else bid past forty dollars and now it's in the truck and I can't find a plate. Bed is short, maybe 20 inches between centers if I had to swear, swing looks like 9 something. Cross slide handle is on the right. There's a threading chart screwed to the front that says Logan in the corner but the chart might be a donation from another machine. Headstock has three steps. I am parked at a rest stop typing this like a criminal.

Right-hand cross slide wheel and a short bed sounds like an early Logan, but the chart being screwed on means nothing. Somebody screwed a Logan chart to my buddy's Atlas and it lived there for twenty years. Count the spindle threads if you can get a nut on it, and look at the tailstock clamp. Logan's is a fork, not a single bolt through the middle.

Don't swear to the swing from the parking lot. Measure center height off the ways. Twice the number is the swing. The chart is scrap until the casting agrees with it.

Center height from top of front way to spindle center. Not from the bench. People measure from the bench and then they own a 14 inch lathe for an hour.

Home. Center height is a hair over 5 inches. So a 10, not a 9. I was wrong in the truck, which is a theme. Tailstock clamp is the fork. Logan chart might actually belong to it. There's a crack in the cover, not in the headstock, I think. Thanks for not letting me call it a South Bend in front of Dave.

A 10 inch Logan for forty dollars is fine if the bed isn't a washboard. Put an indicator on the carriage and run it. Then we'll talk about the crack.
