carriage handwheel freewheels one direction

Handwheel on the carriage drives left like a lathe and right like a suggestion. Gear looks meshed. Key is in the shaft. I don't see a missing tooth, which means it's something I don't know the name of.

Look at the pinion where it meets the rack, under load, both directions. A key that fits the shaft and not the pinion will drive one way and climb the other. Mark the pinion and the shaft with a pen. If they slip relative to each other, that's the joint.

They slip. The key is a short piece of stock someone filed 'close enough,' and close enough was one direction. Made a key that actually fills the seat. Both directions are a lathe now.
