The felts on the carriage were mud. I pulled them. The ways look better with them gone, which I know is not the same as being protected. Do I bother making new ones or is oil and a wipe the real system.

New felt, or even a strip of the craft-store stuff cut so it actually touches, keeps the chip off the oil film. Wiping is what you do when you remember. The felt is what works on the day you don't.
