parting on a 9 inch without the speech

Every parting attempt on the 9A ends with a dig-in at about a third of the way through 1 inch mild. Blade is the cheap T-shape. Stickout is more than I want. Rpm is whatever the belt was already on. I have read enough lectures. What do you actually change first.

Stop the spindle. Grind the blade so it isn't wider at the tip than at the shank, square, and on center. Then lock the carriage. Then a slower belt. Then feed like you mean it, not like you're apologizing. The dig is a blade below center getting pulled in.

And shorten the stickout. 'More than I want' means it's too long. You already know the answer. You're hoping for a different one.

I just use an insert parting tool and crank it. Works on my 12 inch. A 9 inch shouldn't be that different.

A 12 inch has more spindle mass and a stiffer compound. It is different. On the 9 inch, center height within a few thou, blade square, carriage locked. Check center with a rule between the blade and the work, not by eye.

Reground, shorter, carriage locked, one belt slower. It parted. It complained the whole way and I did not die. Ken, I believe you on the 12. This is not that machine. Thanks for the version without the sermon, Dave. It was still a little bit a sermon.

It was a procedure. Sermons are for the rules thread.
